I also found that if I left the heads torqued down (only to 10lb.ft) without a gasket for a week, the gap sometimes decreased. This indicates creep in the block. You might suspect a fracture. It could just be the maleability of the copper shims. You just need to reshim. But if it happens again then the block is probably faulty. Yes, two weeks to do the job!! By the way, other problems may be stretching studs or their seating in the block. You need to take great care torquing up. If you detect one stud is stretching and not pulling its weight then that is it! Each nut should turn the same amount at every 5lb.ft increment. I would not take up to the full torque on a weak block.
