Didn't think the answer would come from the other side of the world! Thanks, Bryan. Your item No 2 confirms why the old linings had grooves running at an angle across the surface. Presumably, this in effect shortens the surface of the lining in contact with the hub, which would increase the frequency of the squeal, hopefully so it is not audible by the human ear. If I turn up at Basingstoke persued by a load of lost dogs you will all know why! I will try this and keep you posted.
