Thanks for the response Keith, it's good to know that horn problems are not unusual. However, in my case I don't think that a slipring replacement would solve it. I have had the steering column apart and examined the slipring, as far as I can recall it looked OK, and anyway the horn push and slipring work just fine as long as the front wheels are off the ground!
