Check the adjustment on the selector bar plungers. It sounds like there may not be enough pressure holding the 1st/2nd bar in the middle detent. Check plunger cylinder is semi-spherical and not worn, moves easily in housing and rocker is not broken. Also check that the middle detent is alinged with housing when both selector bars are in neutral (with 5/32 pin in selector vertical shaft). Check that gear shift moves cleanly when pulled towards you in neutral and is not nudging bars out of detents.
