Thanks for your further comments. I'm sure that cleaning and emptying (again) the tappets and setting the clearance (now that I have the information on what it should be) is the best solution. But, I'm going to try something else before I take the time to do that. I'm going to check the duration of valve opening against the timing diagram in the Manual, with the engine as warm as possible. If the duration is too short, as I think it may be, I'll adjust the push rods accordingly. I know it may seem inconsistent with the overheating, but there was noticeable clatter when the clearances were set (while warm) to around 2 thou. I'll report again here as to how I do! Thanks again for your help.
