(Having a discussion with myself!) Having now properly observed the gate, I can now see that the plunger is correctly oriented. However, even after grinding a 1/16" or so off the round end of the plunger and pinning it on the column, I still haven't succeeded in navigating through the gate -- at least on the bench. In summary, it should work, and maybe it will when securely installed, but so far it hasn't! So I am still wondering if anyone has implemented any sort of an alternative to this rather weird gate arrangement.
