Filing the block must be done with care and a very fine large file. You might use emery cloth over a file. Preferably remove the studs. It really is no substitute for getting the block surface ground. And it takes a lot of patience and care. I have also ground the block on glass plate. You should also surface grind the heads, but do this after you have gas flowed the combustion chambers and balanced them with a burette.
