I should think it is possible to do it without removing the wheel. There were two types of shaft, the later ones had numerous splines which you can see once you have removed the nut. It may not be easy to pull the wheel off! You may have to resort to pullers and a copper mallet. My Javelin is a bit of a mongrel so I cannot say exactly how yours might me.
