Agreed with Keith - it could have been a vacuum gauge, or possibly a Redex upper cylinder lubricator (a dash mounted device for squirting small amounts of Redex into the inlet manifold). Another possibility could be vacuum operated screenwashers, or a (non standard) brake servo. In any event, it's not a standard fitment.
